Poet and professor Robert Leaf (James Stewart) has a disdain for the sciences. Unfortunately for him, his son Erasmus (Bill Mumy) is colorblind, completely tone-deaf and a natural math prodigy. While the professor tries to come to terms with his son's predilection for numbers, the talented youth and his sister Pandora (Cindy Carol) use his math talents to win at the racetrack. Erasmus hopes to use the money he makes to fly to Paris and meet Brigitte Bardot, with whom he is infatuated.

Renegade cop Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) pulls bank robber Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy) from a federal prison on a 48-hour leave to help him capture Hammond's old partner, Albert Ganz (James Remar). Having escaped from a prison work crew, Ganz is on a killing spree around San Francisco, on the trail of half a million dollars that went missing after one of his robberies. Hoop star Desmond (Darius Miles), studly Kyle (Chris Evans), working-class Matty (Bryan Greenberg), stoner Roy (Leonardo Nam) and foxy Anna (Erika Christensen) sign on for the scheme. But getting into the test facility after hours proves trickier than any multiple-choice exam.
